Hiring a digital studio in India for international work

· 7 minute read · Addmarker

Why growing brands hire an Indian studio, how the time zones actually work, and what to insist on before you sign.

Hire for judgment, not for a time zone arbitrage story

Companies in the US, the UK, Europe, the Gulf, and Australia hire studios in India for overlapping reasons: strong English, serious technical range, and a commercial structure that is often saner than a coastal retainer. Cost can be part of the advantage. If cost is the whole pitch, you will get a vendor who is cheap at being average.

Addmarker is built to serve clients across India and worldwide. What matters on the work is whether the people can hold a brand and a codebase in the same plan.

Time zones, without the myth

India does not observe daylight saving. The overlap with London is comfortable. The overlap with Dubai is almost the same working day. The overlap with the US East Coast is a planned window, not an all-day chat. Australia’s east coast meets India at the edges of the day, and a standing slot keeps it civil.

The studios that work across these gaps write decisions down. If your project only moves when everyone is on a call, the time zone will hurt. If the work is written, the time zone becomes a second shift in your favour.

What to put in the agreement

Say who owns the code, the ad accounts, the analytics, and the files. Say the currency of the fee and that media spend is separate. Say how personal data is handled if you operate under GDPR, UK rules, or US state privacy laws. Your lawyer should read that part. The studio should not be improvising it in a footer.

Ask for a named lead, a first-90-days scope, and a way to leave. An international relationship fails more often from vagueness than from distance.

English, and everything after English

“English” is not one audience. American, British, and Indian English carry different rhythms, and a Gulf buyer reading English may still expect references that are local. A good studio notices. A careless one runs one spellcheck and calls it localisation.

Additional languages, including Hindi for India-facing work or Arabic for a UAE campaign, should be scoped as production, not waved through as a free extra. Promise the languages you can actually review.
