How to choose a digital marketing agency in 2026

A practical way to hire a digital marketing agency: start from the job, separate fees from media spend, and ignore rented proof.

Start from the job, not the reel

The useful first question is not “who is the best agency?” It is “what has to be true in six months?” A company that needs a site people can find is not shopping for the same partner as a company that needs a product rebuilt. If the proposal could be sent to any of your competitors with the logo swapped, it is a template.

Write the job in one paragraph before you take meetings. Include the country of the buyer, the offer, and what you will not do. Agencies that are any good will sharpen that paragraph. Agencies that are selling a package will ignore it.

Ask who does the work

Senior people in the room and junior people on the account is a common arrangement. It is fine when it is named. It is a problem when the proposal implies the people in the pitch stay on the work and then they do not.

Ask for the roles on the account, the rough time they spend, and who is allowed to say no to a bad idea. A studio that cannot answer is hoping you will not ask twice.

Separate fees, media, and results

Performance marketing has three different numbers: the fee for the people, the money paid to the ad platform, and the commercial result. Blended into one “budget”, they flatter everyone and explain nothing. A serious agency splits them.

Also refuse guaranteed rankings and guaranteed return on ad spend. Those promises are sales tools. They are not a plan. Agree instead how you will measure enquiries, qualified pipeline, or revenue, and how often you will look.

Proof you can check

Case studies should name the constraint and the decision. Numbers are welcome when the client has agreed to them. Anonymous transformation statistics, award badges that do not link anywhere, and logo walls of companies that never signed a release are not proof. They are decoration.

If you are hiring across borders, add three practical questions. What hours will we actually share? Who writes in the English of our buyers? Where does the data from our forms go? An international studio should answer all three without theatre.

A short list to take into the call

What is in the first 90 days, and what is explicitly out? Who is the person accountable for the whole, not only a channel? What will you need from us every week? What do you refuse to sell? How do we leave, with our accounts, our site, and our code?

The last question matters more than the chemistry of the first call. You are hiring a system you may one day take back inside the company. A good agency is removable on purpose.
